It’s been a busy, busy month and a half… but teaching goes on!
In my classroom my students have learned about the differences between fiction and nonfiction.
We are now focusing on fiction story elements, specifically:
Identifying these four major story elements helps the young learner to retell and include major plot points. I teach my students to retell using the “five finger retell”:
I discuss with the students how the “ending” is parallel to the “solution”. There are a ton of fabulous books to read aloud and use to teach story elements and retells.
This week I’ve used Brat Cat (sorry, I couldn’t help myself!), Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes, and Ralph Tells a Story by Abby Hanlon (Ralph also ties in beautifully with writing personal narratives).
Next up… character traits! Check back soon!
